Chapter Eighteen

Kit could hardly believe they’d be starting college in less than six months, but the tour they were taking made it feel real.

She’d left Jackie in the bedroom portion of the dormitory suite they were exploring, under the guise of checking the bathroom. She’d planned to room with Jackie, but the idea of sharing a living space with three other girls, instead of just one, did not appeal to her. She needed her own space. Since she only had younger brothers, Kit had always had a room to herself. College would be different, and she could accept that, but she’d agreed to room with Jackie specifically because she thought her old friend understood her need for solitude. If housing stuck them with a pair of obnoxious girls in tight quarters like these, Kit doubted she’d survive it.

Jackie bounced into the bathroom. “Come on, Kit, why do you look so nervous? Living here would be fun! College is supposed to be a new experience, a time to meet new friends, and enjoy some much-needed independence. I’m afraid if it’s just the two of us together in a dorm room instead of a suite, it’ll be harder to meet new people.”

Kit wasn’t interested in expanding her social network. She was more intrigued about the classes she’d register for, come summer. Would it be a mistake to room with Jackie? She loved the girl, but she’d also heard plenty of horror stories of ruined friendships when shared living conditions went bad.

“I wonder if they have any single rooms . . .”

Jackie froze, her expression crestfallen. “You’re bailing on me?”

Kit jammed her hands in the back pockets of her jeans, kicking herself for uttering the words out loud. She hadn’t wanted to get into this today, but her reservations were growing. “I didn’t say I’m bailing on you. I’m just getting a little worried that you and I want different things out of our college experience. Don’t take it personally. What if you get bored living with me? And what if I can’t study as much as I’ll need to? I can’t afford to lose my academic scholarship. I’ll need to keep my grades up. You just need to keep running fast to keep yours.”

“I beg your pardon?” Jackie said, narrowing her eyes at Kit. “Are you implying that I won’t work hard on my classes? You know I don’t really care much about the track team. But if they want to give me money to pay part of my tuition, why wouldn’t I take it?”

Jackie’s voice notched up with each word until she was practically yelling. Kit could hear another group entering the suite. Grabbing Jackie’s arm, Kit led her out into the hallway, not wanting to make a scene.

“Keep your voice down!”

Once out of the sample suite, Jackie yanked her arm away and stormed down the hallway. Kit was torn between feeling bad for upsetting her friend and thinking Jackie’s reaction was an example of exactly why she was worried.

She followed
